This is part of Lent, preparing for death. But the Catholic religion doesn’t see it this way. If you’re thinking this sounds incredibly morbid and depressing, you aren’t exactly wrong. As the priest applies them in a cross formation on someone’s forehead, they will say either, “Turn away from sin and believe in the Gospel” or “Remember that you are dust, and unto dust you shall return.” The ashes placed on one’s forehead are a symbol of that. The ashes are representative of dust, or more specifically, the dust of a human corpse.Īs a human corpse decomposes, it turns to dust, or ash.
